A manhunt in Maine after shooting incidents in three separate towns Thursday has communities on alert for a registered sex offender officials say is a suspect.
Maine State Police shut down roads around Lee, Maine, Friday morning, but reopened them when they failed to find Anthony Lord, 35, who is wanted for questioning in connection with
the shootings, The Portland Press Herald reported.
The three towns in which the shootings took place are Lee, Benedicta, and Silver Ridge.
Police have not released information about the four people shot or their conditions, the newspaper said. Lord, who is listed as being from Crystal and Houlton, is considered armed and dangerous.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the death of Lord’s six-month-old son on May 7 is under investigation after the boy was found unresponsive, but Maine police told the Press Herald they did not know if that death was connected to the shootings.
Maine residents told the Daily News they were shocked to be stopped by armed guards checking vehicles in the area and as they crossed into Canada.
The Press Herald reported that Lord has a "lengthy criminal history dating back to 1999, when he was still a teenager." He has been sentenced to prison for a variety of crimes ranging from unlawful sexual contact, assault, criminal trespass, theft, operating under the influence, and trafficking tobacco while in prison. In February, he was sentenced to 10 months in jail for a domestic assault charge, but served only 45 days before the remainder of the sentence was suspended.
On the heels of the Marines shot in Tennessee this week, many went online to express their frustration at the violence:
