Waves generated from Hurricane Marie have brought out California surfers and may be blamed for the death of one of them at Malibu Pier.
KTLA-TV reported that a surfer died after being found unconscious in Malibu by rescuers Tuesday morning. Malibu Pier remained closed all day Wednesday.
Officials told the television station that a high surf advisory had been issued the previous day for the area. The advisory was in effect Tuesday through Friday at 6 p.m. for Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Orange County beaches, said authorities.

"Unfortunately there are some people who probably shouldn't be in the water, but sometimes I think even when we're out there and we think we know what we're doing we probably shouldn't be in the water either," professional surfer Laird Hamilton told KTLA-TV. "It's something that's inside of you and you have to go. Follow your calling."
High surf caused damage at Avalon Harbor at Santa Catalina Island Wednesday evening,
officials told the Los Angeles Times, while a structure on the Pacific Coast Highway north of Malibu slid into the water.
Officials posted photos on social media about the damaged caused by storm surge from Hurricane Marie, even though the storm remained out in the Pacific Ocean.
Seal Beach Marine Safety Chief Joe Bailey told the
Weather Channel that his workers were trying to dig a channel to let water flow from the beach back into the ocean. The Weather Channel reported that two Port of Long Beach cargo terminals stopped work Tuesday because of 10- to 15-foot-high wave surges.
