Man Declared Dead 45 Minutes Revives After Son Says He Can't Die

A man who was declared dead for 45 minutes after his heart stopped came back to life earlier this month in Ohio.

Tony Yahle, a 37-year-old diesel mechanic from West Carrollton, Ohio, was declared dead after medical personnel worked for 45 minutes to stimulate his heart, which according to his cardiac monitor had flat-lined, WHIOTV.com reported.

"We looked at each other [and] we'd given him all the medicine we had in our code cart," Dr. Raja Nazir, Yahle's cardiologist told ABC News. "At some point, you have to call it off."

After hearing the news that his father had been pronounced dead, Yahle's 17-year-old son, Lawrence, reportedly ran down the hall and into the room where his father lay, where he grabbed his father's bedside and yelled, "Dad, you're not going to die today!" ABC News reported.

Moments later, the medical staff at Kettering Medical Center observed a slight heart beat pulse that appeared once or twice each minute, prompting them to restart their efforts to resuscitate Yahle.

"When I looked at the electrical activity, I was surprised," Nazir told ABC News. "I thought we'd better make another effort to revive him."

Nazir proceeded to squeeze one of Yahle's hanging medicine bags in order to restore his blood pressure and the medical team jumped back into action.

"Very slowly, the heart rate was picking up," Nazir said, describing the incident as "mind boggling."

"In the last 20 years, I've never seen anybody who we have pronounced dead ... and then for him to come back, I've never seen it," Nazir told the Dayton Daily News. "I'm calling it a miracle because I've never seen anything like it."

Five days later, Yahle regained consciousness.

Yahle's near-death experience began at 4 a.m. that morning, when his wife Melissa noticed her husband's breathing was irregular and she was unable to wake him, leading her to call an ambulance, which rushed him to an area hospital.

Prior to the 45-minute resuscitation attempt at the hospital, EMS personnel treating Yahle in the ambulance were able to find a heartbeat only after shocking him several times, ABC News reported.

It is still unclear what caused the 37-year-old father of three's heart to stop, considering physicians found that his arteries were not clogged as they had expected them to be.

Soon after regaining consciousness, Yahle was healthy enough to sit down for several interviews with national media outlets.

In an interview with ABC News, Yahle, who is now fitted with a pacemaker and defibrillation device, said he didn't remember the ordeal, calling it "a miracle."

"Even the doctors are agreeing it’s a miracle," Yahle told ABC News. "Nobody has any explanation except I had a lot of people praying for me and God moved that day."
