Man Survives Being Hit By Amtrak; Train Was Traveling 110 MPH

An Indiana man miraculously survived Friday after he was hit by an Amtrak train going as fast as 110 mph.

Darryle See, 22, of Michigan City, Ind., was reportedly walking west on the tracks along U.S. 12 and wearing headphones when a Chicago-bound train struck him around 11:30 a.m.

The force of the impact threw See into a field 20 feet away from the tracks. He was wearing just shorts and tennis sneakers at the time of the Amtrak accident, according to the Northwest Indiana Times.

One of his shoes ended up 150 feet from his body.

"I have never seen anything like that before," LaPorte County Police Maj. John Boyd told NBC Chicago.

Witnesses who saw a body lying near the tracks immediately called police.

"He was conscious and alert, sitting up and talking to us. I never would have guessed he was the victim. It was absolutely amazing," Boyd said. "I've seen a number of people get hit by trains and it’s never a good thing."

Boyd said the conductor claims he sounded the train's emergency horn several times and applied the brakes, but See didn’t respond; he was hit head-on.

Helen Hugely, See's grandmother, said her grandson suffered a few pelvic fractures and a non-life-threatening neck injury but that "he's going to make it."

"He says he doesn't remember anything until he woke up on the other side of the tracks," Hugley told the Times. "Didn't remember even walking on the tracks let alone getting hit."

Police speculate See survived because the front of the Amtrak train is angled, which could have deflected some of the force of the impact.
