A homeless Boston man who returned $42,000 that he found in a backpack over the weekend, saying he couldn’t have kept "even a penny," was honored Monday for his good deed.

Glen James stumbled across a black backpack outside a T.J. Maxx store at the South Bay Center in Dorchester, Mass., Saturday. The bag reportedly contained $2,400 in cash, nearly $40,000 in traveler's checks, passports, and other personal documents.

He turned the backpack over to police who later located its owner, a Chinese visitor who had lost it inside the mall's Best Buy store.

James received a special citation from the Boston police commissioner Monday and was commended for his honesty.

"Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a... penny of the money I found," James said in a written statement, according to the Boston Globe. "I am extremely religious — God has always very well looked after me."

James' story touched many, including Ethan Whittington of Richmond, Va., who decided to start a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe.com to raise money for a reward for James.

"I thought what he did was very honorable. I think anybody, whether homeless or not, if you find something of that value, and you have the honesty to turn it in, it makes you feel good to see somebody willing to do that, especially in the situation he was in," Whittington told Boston Magazine.
