A Colorado man accidentally shot and killed his 14-year-old stepdaughter this week because he reportedly thought she was a burglar sneaking into the home.
Police were dispatched to the Colorado Springs residence shortly before 6 a.m. Monday on a report of a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they found the critically injured teenager in the basement.
According to KOAA-TV, she had apparently been sneaking back into the house through a cellar window.

The unidentified girl was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.
"I heard three bangs,"
Jani Harvey, who lives across the street, told KRDO.com. "I assumed it was someone hitting on a car or a garage door or something like that. I thought it was strange, and I thought it was an odd hour for it to be going on. It's kind of a quiet neighborhood."
No charges have yet been filed, but the district attorney is investigating.
The incident is reminiscent of the Oscar Pistorius murder case.
The "Blade Runner" Paralympic gold medalist is currently awaiting trial for fatally shooting his model girlfriend on Valentine's Day at the couple's Pretoria, South Africa home. The double amputee initially told investigators he thought he was firing at a burglar, but prosecutors say the fact that he fired four gunshots through the locked bathroom door means he had enough time to realize it was his girlfriend in the bathroom and not an intruder.
