Soap opera star Marcus Smythe has died at age 70.

The actor was surrounded by family when he passed away on Aug. 20 at his home in La Crescenta, California, according to an obituary published in The Los Angeles Times recently.

Smythe is best known as the beloved romantic lead in popular daytime soaps from the 1970s and '80s. He starred as Gordon Middleton on the longtime top-rated soap "Guiding Light" and also appeared as Dane Taylor on "Search for Tomorrow," and Peter Love on NBC's long-running and award-winning "Another World."

Smythe's career was not limited to soap operas. He appeared in dozens of other TV series including "7th Heaven," "Seinfeld," "Mad About You" and "Who's The Boss," and starred alongside Henry Fonda and Myrna Loy in the 1981 TV-movie "Summer Solstice" and Jessica Tandy in the 1991 TV-movie "The Story Lady," according to Deadline.

His work also extended to theatre and his performances earned him a Drama-Logue Award and LA Weekly Drama Awards.

Smythe is survived by wife Suzanne Goddard, sons Harrison and Duncan, and brother Casey, as well as nieces and nephews.

Smythe's family requested that, in lieu of flower tributes, donations instead be made to charities or a Democrat in the upcoming election. His memorial remembrance will be deferred to either electronic access or a post-pandemic in-person service.
