Maria Jose Alvarado, Miss Honduras, was found dead and buried with her sister just days before she was scheduled to compete in the Miss World pageant in London and now the boyfriend of her sister and another man have been arrested.
Alvarado, 19, and her sister, Sofia Trinidad, 23, disappeared last Thursday, after leaving a party near Santa Barbara, in northern Honduras,
according to the BBC News. Their bodies were discovered in the village of Cablotales, near the River Agugua, according to Leandro Osorio, chief of Honduras National Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
Alvarado was scheduled to travel to London Sunday and try on her Miss World dress for the competition.
Plutarco Ruiz, the boyfriend of Trinidad, was arrested in connection with the sisters' deaths, Arturo Corrales, the country's interior minister,
told Reuters.
"I can confirm that the Alvarado sisters were found," Osorio told a local television station. "We also have the murder weapon and the vehicle in which they were transported to the site where they were buried."
Corrales told Reuters that along with Ruiz authorities arrested a second suspect and recovered two pistols.
According to her
Miss World profile page, Alvarado was a student living in Santa Bárbara with the goal of working someday as a government diplomat. She enjoyed a variety of sports and performed musical and dancing celebrations and festivities in Honduras.
"Our ethnic groups like the Tawakas, Lencas, Pech, Garifunas and Misquitos have made of Honduras a country with a cultural diversity rich in customs, gastronomy and religious beliefs," she said about her country.
