Alexandros Pittas, an orthopedic surgeon,
told Agence France-Presse that Faithfull's surgery over the weekend was successful but that she will need to be evaluated to determine if she will have to stay in the hospital for a week or so.
Becoming a pop and rock star in the 1960s and '70s, Faithfull's five-decade career has often been overshadowed by drug abuse and a tumultuous personal life. Most recently, health problems have plagued the singer, including breast cancer, Hepatitis C, and a broken bone in her back suffered in August of last year, which forced her to cancel several shows.
To celebrate her 50 years in the music business, Faithfull is set to release her 21st album in September, "Give My Love to London."
Faithfull became a star in the mid-'60s after recording “As Tears Go By,” the first song ever written by the Rolling Stones’ Jagger and Keith Richards.
"I was at a launch party and Andrew (Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham) came up (to me) and said: 'I'm going to make you a star.' He really did,"
Faithfull told the Guardian last year. "I thought he was incredible, funny. He gave me the first ever Jagger-Richards composition to sing for my first record. What a way to start."
