Marines: 'Girly' Hats Just a Rumor, and Obama Wasn't Involved

By    |   Friday, 25 October 2013 05:54 PM EDT

The Marines on Friday refuted reports that they're implementing "girly" hats as part of the uniform and that President Obama had anything to do with it.

The New York Post reported Thursday that a senior Marine source had told them, "We don't even have enough funding to buy bullets, and the [Department of Defense] is pushing to spend $8 million on covers that look like women's hats! The Marines deserve better. It makes them look ridiculous."

But the Marines say they're not considering "girly" caps and Obama isn't behind the change.

"The president in no way, shape or form directed the Marine Corps to change our uniform cover," the Marine Corps statement read, according to Stars and Stripes. "We are looking for a new cover for our female Marines for one overriding reason: The former manufacturer went out of business. ... The Marine Corps has zero intention of changing the male cover."

Male and female Marines currently wear different styles of covers as part of their dress and service uniforms. The maker of the women's "bucket cover," which looks different than the men's cover, can no longer produce the cap.

The buzz around the "girly" hats began because the Marine Corps had been encouraged by the Department of Defense to seek a more unisex option for the caps, and rumors were subsequently linked directly with President Barack Obama.

What actually happened, according to Stars & Stripes, was that the Marine Corps Uniform Board sought feedback from active and reserve Marines. They were asked whether they believe women should wear the current male cover, with small changes, or should all Marines adopt what they call the "Dan Daly" cap, named for a two-time Medal of Honor recipient during World War I.
