Mario Batali Buys 200 Pairs of Orange Crocs Before Discontinuation

Chef Mario Batali, known for his bright orange Crocs shoes, ordered 200 pairs of the comfy footwear when he heard the company would be discontinuing his signature color.

In a Q&A interview with Details magazine, Batali talked about important subjects like fatherhood, fame and shoes. Details opened the shoe subject by asking if he was ever going to give up Crocs and Batali closed that idea down with a simple question: “Got anything better?”

Batali told Details that the Crocs company made a special run of the color to meet his order before they officially stopped making them.

Still, he was clearly unhappy about the idea he couldn’t buy his favorite shoes in his favorite color. “They're gonna stop the Mario Batali orange! It's preposterous! But they're doing pretty well without me,” he said. “Nothing lasts forever, baby.

Batali shared his Crocs story with Inc. magazine this year, explaining that his wife gave him a pair of Crocs when he opened his first restaurant. “I’m a big fan of the Crocs look and the way that it shames most of my friends in the fashion world,” he told Inc.

As a sidenote, Batali told Inc. that orange became his family’s color when he and his wife started dressing their kids in orange and yellow to make them stand out in the crowds of black-and-gray dressed kids. The couple liked being able to quickly pick out their kids amongst a sea of other children.

In 2007, Batali carried his Crocs love to the endorsement level, putting his name behind Crocs’ “Bistro Mario Batali” shoe. That shoe will continue to be produced in orange, the Crocs company told ABC News.
