Mark Cuban Blasts Bud Selig Over A-Rod's 'Personal' Punishment (Video)

By    |   Monday, 12 August 2013 11:47 AM EDT

Though some may say Alex Rodriguez's 211-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs was justified, Mark Cuban thinks it's "horrible." He says Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig is dispensing a "personal" punishment.

Cuban, who owns the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, went off on Selig during an appearance on Jay Leno's "The Tonight Show" last week.

"Horrible. I think it's disgraceful what Major League Baseball is trying to do to [A-Rod]," Cuban said. "Not that he doesn't deserve to be suspended, he does. But they have policies in place: first-time offender 50 games, second time a 100. 214 games? That's personal.

"This is more about Bud Selig trying to flex his muscles and say look, 'If you don't kiss the ring, I'm going to take care of you and kick you out of Major League Baseball,' and I think that's wrong."

Rodriguez was suspended for 211 games last week for his connection to Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in south Florida accused of supplying MLB players with PEDs. About a dozen other players were also suspended for their roles in the scandal.

Cuban called the entire MLB industry "Bud Selig's mafia," and said the commissioner made it especially tough on him when he was trying to buy the Texas Rangers in 2010.

"He runs it the way he wants to run it," Cuban said. "When I was trying to buy the Rangers, it was an open auction. I sat in there with my good, hard-earned money trying to bid and they did everything possible to keep me from buying the team. They had lawyers in there trying to change the rules; they had people trying to put up more money. For him to come out and attack A-Rod the way he did and do something totally outside the rules."
