Marriage Proposal at Ballpark Where Woman Said No Was Fake (Video)

By    |   Wednesday, 07 August 2013 06:10 PM EDT

A video depicting a jilted boyfriend striking out with a minor-league baseball game marriage proposal is a fake.

As it turns out, he never actually stepped to the plate.

In the video, "David" and "Jessica" participate in a trivia contest between innings at a Rock Cats game. The third question is the most important, as David asks Jessica to marry him. She feigns shocked, declines, and runs off the field in front of her surprised beau and the team's master of ceremonies.

"After watching a public proposal, we talked about what would happen if the answer were NO, and how that might affect a crowd, and those viewing it after on video," Mike Abramson, Vice President of Marketing for the team, said in a statement posted on the team's website.

"We worked with two of our employees on the skit and executed a digital strategy to set the video on a viral path; we could not be more pleased with the outcome."

The team, the Double-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, said the video, "Girl Says No to Marriage Proposal at Rock Cats Baseball Game," was viewed nearly 600,000 times on YouTube and has been covered by network TV news, ESPN, and others.

"If anyone was offended by the promotion in any way we sincerely apologize; this endeavor was intended to entertain and remind fans you never know what you're going to see at a Rock Cats game," Abramson said.

Fans have been getting engaged at sporting events for decades, often with the help of a team's giant scoreboard. The Internet is littered with examples of when things went poorly, like this YouTube video of failed proposals at sports games.

Last month, a man arranged for his brother-in-law, a police officer, to pull over his girlfriend and recite a list of phony charges. After she was put in the back of the police cruiser, the man popped out and proposed. She, at least, said yes.
