Mary-Kate Olsen has officially filed for divorce from her husband of nearly five years, Olivier Sarkozy.

The former child star has been waiting for courts to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic to file for divorce and was able to do so on Monday, when the New York County Supreme Court began to accept all cases again and not just essential ones, according to People.

Olsen was initially turned away from courts on April 17, when only emergency divorce cases were being accepted. On May 18, she requested an emergency divorce order, citing fears that her husband was forcing her out of their apartment, but this was also denied.

New York City matrimonial attorney Bernard Post explained to People that this was because her filing was not considered essential.

"Domestic violence is an emergency, perhaps refusing to provide health care is an emergency. I want to be divorced because I want to be divorced now is not an emergency," said Post.

Olsen was shocked to learn that Sarkozy allegedly emailed her attorneys earlier this month, giving her several days to move her belongings out of their apartment.

She was unaware that her estranged husband had terminated their lease and said she could not meet the deadline due to the coronavirus outbreak, reported TMZ.

Fortunately, Olsen came to an arrangement to use the couple's Hamptons home as a temporary residence until legal proceedings are sorted out, noted Daily Mail.

It is alleged that the split stemmed from a disagreement on whether or not to have children. Olsen wanted to have kids but Sarkozy, who shares two adult children with his ex-wife, did not.

"A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for her. This has changed," an unnamed source told People.

"Olivier has two grown kids and doesn’t want more," a second source added. "Mary-Kate thought he would budge on that and he hasn’t."
