Mary Steenburgen has more than 50 film credits to her name, but the veteran actress may be switching scripts for songs now that she's been signed to Universal Music. Steenburgen, 60, says she has developed a new passion — singing and songwriting.
"I had a minor surgery on my arm [a few years back], but it was enough that I went under general anesthetic, and
the music started right after that," she told CBS News over the weekend in an interview to promote her upcoming movie, "Last Vegas."

The actress says she began writing everything down and now has more than 40 songs under her belt. She's collaborated with musicians from Nashville and was also signed to Universal Music as a songwriter. In "Last Vegas," she plays a lounge singer and even performs one of her original compositions on screen.
"When you write, you go to heaven, you really go to some other place that is really almost divine," Steenburgen's husband Ted Danson said of his wife's new musical fascination.
Steenburgen also plays the accordion, a talent she took up after Danson gave her the instrument for Valentine's Day.
"I'm obsessed by it," she said. "I love it beyond belief. There's something about it that just appeals to me, I don't know why.
"At one point I kind of looked in the mirror and said, you know, you're a mom, you're a wife, people count on you, you can't go off the deep end into this kind of crazy, musical swirl," she joked.
"Last Vegas," which also stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline, hits theaters Nov. 1.
