A possible suspect was arrested on Friday in the shooting deaths of two people and wounding of two others at shopping centers in the suburbs of Washington, D.C.
Eulalio Sevilla Tordil, 62, an officer with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, was suspected of killing his wife and shooting a bystander on Thursday in Beltsville, Maryland, in Prince George's County.
NBC Washington reported that Gladys Tordil had arrived at the parking lot of High Point High School in Beltsville to pick up her daughters around 4:40 p.m. when the suspect reportedly stepped out of his vehicle and confronted her.
Prince George's County Police chief Hank Stawinski alleged that Eulalio Tordil shot and injured a bystander who tried to intervene and then shot Gladys Tordil several times, resulting in her death.
When a pair of shootings broke out in neighboring Montgomery County, investigators turned their attention to Tordil, who had threatened to commit "suicide by cop," police said.
Montgomery County Police announced his arrest on Twitter.
The Associated Press reported Friday that three people were shot at the Westfield Montgomery Mall parking lot in Bethesda on Friday morning. Montgomery County Police Assistant Chief Darryl McSwain said there was no reason to believe the victims knew the shooter.
McSwain said that a woman was also shot at a grocery store roughly 5 miles away, but was not sure if the shooting was related to either of the other two. The woman shot reportedly died.
Police sources told news outlets like CNN that the three shootings in less than 24 hours could be related.
Gladys Tordil worked as a science teacher at Parkdale High School in Riverdale, Maryland, the television station reported.
Eulalio Tordil works for Federal Protective Services, according to the Prince George's County Police statement.
Stawinski said that the incident took place only in the parking lot,
noted The Washington Post. Prince George's County schools spokeswoman Sherrie Johnson told the Post that dismissal at High Point is at 2:25 p.m., but some students usually remain for after-school programs.
"At no point was this an active shooter inside the school," Stawinski said.
Kevin Maxwell, chief executive officer of the Prince George's County school system, told reporters at a news conference that some students and teachers remained inside the school as a precaution and were later allowed to leave.
No students were harmed in connection with the incident, school officials said.
Stawinski said that since a weapon was not recovered at the scene, Tordil could still be armed. The intervening man, whose name was not released, was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, noted the Prince George's statement.
