Matt Garza Apologizes for Twitter Rant About Eric Sogard's Wife

Matt Garza, the Texas Rangers pitcher, has learned the hard way that impulsively tweeting while angry isn’t always the smartest thing to do.

Two days after he lashed out at the wife of an Oakland A’s infielder on Friday, Garza apologized.

“All I want to say is I let my competitive spirit cross outside the lines, and that shouldn’t happen,” Garza said in his apology, according to ESPN. “I let my passion, my fire carry over, and that’s not how this game should be played. And for that, I apologized to the Sogards for anything that was said through my Twitter. That’s all I have. I regret what happened.”

It all started when A’s second baseman Eric Sogard bunted during the seventh inning, which pushed the team to a run in the A's 4-2 win.

Sogard’s wife, Kaycee, tweeted what appeared to be an innocent message to “Get em on, get em over and get em in!”

Garza fired back: “@KayceeSogard tell your husband to speak up so his wife doesn’t have to do it for him… Chumps!"

“Certain people can’t shut there (cq) woman up!” another Garza tweet read.

Twitter users criticized Garza's charged comments.

“Way to piss off all the female fans,” tweeted @BlondeRaider21.

“Love Matt Garza’s competitiveness, but he’s another guy for whom Twitter isn’t a good idea,” tweeted Chuck Cooperstein (@CoopMavs).

“Matt Garza’s example is not why athletes should stay off Twitter, but rather why you should think before you tweet,” tweeted @FieldhouseMedia.

The Rangers’ assistant general manager, Thad Levine, said Garza was out of line.

“Those are not sentiments condoned by the team,” Levine said, the New York Daily News reported. “When we acquired him, we knew, appreciated and were excited about the fire and passion he displays on the field when he is pitching and in the dugout supporting his teammates. Our sincere hope is that is where it stays.”

Garza is hardly the first professional athlete to get in trouble for a tweet. NBA forward Kenyon Martin once wrote, “All haters should catch full blown Aids and Die! Do the world a favor! and rid us of you all!"
