Matt Lauer, the disgraced “Today” anchor fired over sexual harassment accusations, apparently is sill planning a comeback and was recently overheard telling fans “don’t worry. I’ll be back on TV,” The New York Post’s Page Six reported.
Lauer didn't say when, where or how that would happen.
Sources reported seeing Lauer at Donohue’s Steak House, chatting with some older women who approached him and said they missed him.
He assured them that he would not be out of the public’s eye for long.
“I’ve been busy being a dad. But don’t worry, I’ll be back on TV,” he told the fans, sources told Page Six.
Despite speculation about Lauer and other men who were laid low by the #MeToo movement preparing comebacks, none have succeeded so far. Fortune magazine detailed how Lauer, Charlie Rose, Louis C.K. and Mario Batali were preparing to return after "exile."
Rumors of Lauer’s supposed comeback, though, have kept surfacing since NBC News axed him last November for engaging in “inappropriate sexual behavior.”
An internal investigation revealed that four women came forward to complain about Lauer's workplace behavior toward them, but the women told investigators they didn’t directly tell “a manager or anyone else in a position of authority about their encounters with Lauer,” The Hollywood Reporter revealed.
Lauer maintained a low profile in the weeks after his ousting but in June reports began to emerge about his increased social activity, Vanity Fair reported.
Fueling speculation about a comeback was Lauer being spotted having lunch with a former “Today” senior producer, Page Six said.
He has also been spotted engaging in the Hamptons social scene, attending numerous events including a Paddle for Pink charity event and the Hampton Classic on Sunday.
His increased social presence follows his divorce with wife Annette Roque.
Lauer recently sold his Manhattan apartment for above the asking price of $7.35 million, making a profit of millions on the four-bedroom, Upper East Side spread.
