McDonald's is giving away free coffee during breakfast for the next two weeks in an effort to pull customers away from a growing list of breakfast rivals.
According to Time magazine, the burger chain is offering the coffee from roughly 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. from September 16-29. It is McDonald's second such salvo in the fast-food breakfast war, coming roughly six months after its first two-week coffee giveaway timed to coincide with the launch of Taco Bell's breakfast menu.
McDonald's also had horrible sales in August — global same-story sales were down 3.7 percent — and the company hopes free coffee will entice more customers to step through its Golden Arches during the morning hours.

“"We know our guests are busy, especially during the morning, and a free cup of coffee goes a long way in helping get their days started," said Greg Watson, senior vice president, McDonald’s US Menu Innovation,
according to CBS New York.
"That’s why we want to treat customers once again so they can taste for themselves just how great their mornings can be with a cup of McCafé coffee and freshly made breakfast."
As part of the free coffee promotion, McDonald's and McCafé are asking Twitter users to use the hashtag "#SipandTell" to share their embarrassing pre-coffee moments on the social network.
NBC Chicago reported that starting in early 2015, fans of McDonald's coffee will be able to buy the grounds for at home-brewing. McDonald's has partnered with Kraft to put out the McCafé grounds in grocery stores nationwide, following in the footsteps of other coffee purveyors like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.
