Mega Millions Winning Ticket for $189M Jackpot Hits in Maryland

Mega Millions officials are still waiting for the winner of the $189 million jackpot to come forward after the winner purchased the prize ticket in Maryland.

The winner this week matched the selected numbers of 07, 10, 30, 37, 53 with the bonus ball 01, which were revealed Tuesday, according to the Baltimore Sun. The jackpot is worth $129.7 million if the winner goes for a cash payout, about $86 million after taxes, state lottery spokeswoman Carole Everett told the Sun.

Everett said the winner has 182 days to claim the prize.

"Some people come in right away," said Everett. "Some sort of absorb the shock of it all, talk to people for advice and then come in."

This is the second time in 2013 that a Maryland outlet sold the winning ticket, the Washington Post reported.  The Post said a Mt. Airy woman captured the $26 million jackpot in February.

That winner was a Maryland grandmother who had planned to purchase her first home, according to the Maryland lottery website.

"This will be the first time anyone from our family has ever owned a home," the 48-year-old woman told lottery officials back in February. "There have been so many winners in Western Maryland lately, we’re glad we were one of them."

The October win was good news for the state, which gets $11.3 million in taxes off the lottery winnings, the Post stated.

The winning ticket this time was issued at a Dash In convenience store in Severn, south of Baltimore, reported the Sun. The store gets a check of $100,000 in commission for selling the winning ticket, according to the Post.

"I thought it was somebody joking with me," Sukhwinder Singh, owner of Severn's Dash In and three other stores, told the Sun. "Now I'm excited to know who won the ticket."

The last Mega Millions winner was named in September, when Dick Zelasko, of Troy, Mich., came forward to claim an $80 million jackpot from the July 5 drawing, according to the lottery's website. Lottery officials said that jackpot had originally been advertised at $79 million but was increased as a result of strong sales, per the website.
