Speaking on Wednesday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “The Last Word,” Meghan McCain minimized Rep. Michele Bachmann’s role in the GOP, saying she is “no better than a poor man’s Sarah Palin.”
"I think it’s important to note that Michele Bachmann is not a leader.” the oft-outspoken daughter of Sen. John McCain told host Lawrence O’Donnell. “She not a leader of the Republican Party.”
When O’Donnell asked McCain her reaction to Bachmann’s response as a Tea party spokesman to President Obama’s State of the Union address, she was no less critical.
“It is one rogue woman that can’t even look into the camera directly,” said McCain, referring to a studio glitch that made it look like Bachmann was looking off to the right. “I take none of it seriously and I think if the Tea Party wants to put a candidate up to give a response, why don’t they have someone like Rand Paul who was elected on the Tea Party platform give that.”
The former GOP presidential candidate’s daughter, known for her attacks on negative rhetoric from both political parties, also unleashed her critique in a different forum. McCain tweeted that having two responses to Obama’s speech could hurt the Republican Party in 2012. Her two tweets read:
“I cannot believe the tea party is issuing a separate response to SOTU than the GOp (sic). And that Michelle Bachmann is the one doing it.”
“That is pretty much in a nutshell the problem we are facing in the next election cycle. This split in the party is only going to grow.”
