Journalist Alison Hope Weiner has come to actor Mel Gibson’s defense, pleading with Hollywood movie studios to take him off their blacklist.
“I propose to Hollywood that
it’s time to forgive Mel Gibson,” Weiner wrote on Deadline.com. “He has been in the doghouse long enough. It’s time to give the guy another chance.”

Gibson drew criticism for an anti-Semitic rant during a 2006 DUI arrest, angry phone recordings and accusations of battery against ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva during a custody battle, and a domestic violence restraining order by his stepmother.
Weiner’s plea comes on the 10th anniversary of the release of “The Passion of the Christ.”
The Jewish writer called herself “a journalist who vilified Gibson in The New York Times and Entertainment Weekly until my coverage allowed me to get to know him.”
Gibson hasn’t been directly employed by a studio since “The Passion of the Christ” was released, and Weiner says it's time to end the quiet blacklisting of the actor, whose work also includes the films “Braveheart” and “Lethal Weapon.”
Her article details Gibson’s apologies, saying that while he won’t defend himself, Gibson has pulled himself together, become sober and quietly donated millions to charitable Jewish causes.
Reactions on Twitter to Weiner's Deadline piece were mixed.
