Mensa 3-Year-Old: Arizona Girl Youngest Genius in High IQ Club

By    |   Tuesday, 18 February 2014 07:37 AM EST

A 3-year-old girl who reads at a fifth-grade level and taught herself Spanish recently became the youngest Arizonan ever to be accepted into Mensa, the international club for geniuses.

While the average person has an IQ of around 100, Alexis Martin's is off the charts. Literally.

When the child's parents took her to be tested, she scored above 160 — the IQ score held by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, and geniuses Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein (Einstein never actually took an IQ test but experts predict that he would have scored a 160).

Martin's parents first noticed their daughter's amazing mind when she would recite her bedtime stories verbatim.

"From 12-18 months old, we'd be driving around in the car and she would recite her bedtime story from the night before," Martin's father, Ian, told the East Valley Tribune. "I mean we're talking 20- to 25-page books . . . She didn’t just recite them, she recited them exactly."

Now, Martin's parents have to decide whether the 3-year-old Mensa member should be enrolled in regular school.

"Does she go into kindergarten early? We are kind of hesitant because we do want her to get that social aspect," Ian Martin said.

The doctors that tested Martin advised against putting the girl in regular school because brilliant children often have high anxiety and find it more calming to be around other genius kids, according to the Tribune.
