Meryl Streep and her husband of 45 years, Don Gummer, have announced that they separated six years ago.
The three-time Oscar winner, who on Friday was seen wearing her wedding band while attending the Princesa de Asturias Awards in Asturias, Spain, and Gummer made the announcement in a statement to People.
"Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart," it read.
Streep and Gummer met after her partner John Cazale died of lung cancer in 1978. They got married six months later, had their first child, Henry Wolfe, in 1979, and later had three more kids — Louisa Jacobson, Grace Gummer, and Mamie Gummer. They are also now grandparents to five grandchildren.
Over the course of their decadeslong marriage, neither has spoken much about their relationship, but in an interview with Vogue, Streep said the secret to their long-lasting marriage was "goodwill and willingness to bend — and to shut up every once in a while."
"There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation. But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life. I can’t imagine eschewing one for the other," she added.
The announcement comes days after Jada Pinkett Smith made the shocking revelation that she and husband Will Smith have been separated since 2016.
In a clip from her NBC News primetime special with Hoda Kotb, Pinkett Smith, 52, said she and Smith, 55, had been living "completely separate lives" since 2016, and that they had not gone public with the news sooner because they were not "ready yet."
They were "still trying to figure out between the two of us, how to be in partnership," she said. "How do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out."
Pinkett Smith noted that she and Smith, who have been married since 1997, are not legally divorced.
