Michael Fassbender said he will never star as James Bond, and suggested that a woman should play a female 007 instead.
The 39-year-old X-Men actor was among those who were considered as possibilities to land the movie role as the new James Bond, picking up where Daniel Craig, 48, left off, but he says there’s no reason to speculate any longer, the Mirror noted.
Fassbender said in the December issue of British GQ that nobody around Craig’s age could improve upon what he did in the role of Bond, and when asked about whether he would sign up for the job, he said: “To be honest, no.”
“As an acting role, I think Daniel has done such a cracking job in this group. I think the franchise needs something new,” he said.
Fassbender then threw out the idea of an actress playing “Jane Bond” or giving the role to a young actor.
“It’s always a fun conversation to have,” he said. “But Bond should be someone in their early 20s…I always thought Bond should be British, but let’s get an American in or maybe someone like Jack O’Connell would be good?”
“Or even better, how about Jane Bond? A woman,” he said.
“What about we start the film back in Sandhurst, Army training rather than on a yacht, or he’s in the Middle East on an op and gets thrown in the brig for insubordination? He’s going to get court-martialed…I have thought about it a lot,” he added.
Despite saying he’s not interested in the role, the Irish-German star talked about his love for the 007 movies, according to Mirror.
“I just love Bond. Doesn’t everyone? I grew up with him,” he said.
X-Files star Gillian Anderson seemed to take Fassbender’s remarks about a possible “Jane Bond” to heart, as she surprised fans with a tweet of a mock-up poster of herself as 007, Sky News noted.
Other actors who have been talked about for the new Bond role include Idris Elba, Tom Hiddleston, Damian Lewis and Tom Hardy, even though Fassbender believes it will be an outsider who will get the new role.
“One thing is for sure, it won’t be anyone on the bookies’ lists,” Fassbender said. “It never is.”
