Michael Johns, an "American Idol" finalist during Season 7 of the reality singing show in 2008, died Friday from a possible blood clot in his ankle.
Johns, an Australian singer and songwriter, finished in eighth place during the season that was won by David Cook.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Johns followed up his "American Idol" showing with the album "Hold Back My Heart," and the lead single off of it "Heart on My Sleeve."
"Sources close to Michael Johns tell us he went to a doctor on Thursday to check out the pain he had been feeling in his ankle,"
reported TMZ last week. "The swelling and bruising had made their way up to his leg. Doctors didn't find any problems however – so they cleared him to go home.

"We're told the next afternoon at his friend's apartment ... Johns' body was found on the couch unresponsive. When paramedics arrived, he was already dead," TMZ's report continued.
Johns had worked with award-winning producer David Foster, performing in his PBS special "Hit Man: David Foster and Friends," appearing on "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" in 2012 and sang a numerous "A-list charity events," according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was married to his wife Stacey since 2007.
American Idol issued a statement on Facebook, sending condolences.
Simon Cowell, Josh Groban and other stars expressed their sympathies for the singer through social media.
