Michael Sam, the first openly gay NFL player, has gotten engaged to his longtime boyfriend Vito Cammisano,
TMZ reported Thursday.
Sam and Cammisano met while they were both attending the University of Missouri, where Sam was on the football team, and Cammisano on the swim team.
When Sam, 25, was drafted into the NFL in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams last year, the pair made headlines when they kissed in celebration.
Sam, the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was later released from the Rams and signed to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad. He was then released from that team in October.
It's unclear whether Sam or Cammisano popped the question, but it appears the "yes" came while the gents were vacationing in Italy. Sam has posted many pictures of their vacation on his social media accounts.
As The Huffington Post reported, Sam said in an Oprah Winfrey Network documentary that aired last month that he hoped to get married one day, and that his husband might very well be his current boyfriend.
"I think if someone wants to spend the rest of their lives with another person, by all means, do that," Sam said. "It's all about equality."
Sam is not currently signed to any NFL team, but hopes to be picked up in the future. Many have asked him if he thought he was dropped from the NFL because he is gay, and he has repeatedly said he doesn't think that was the case.
"I don't like to think that way," he said of the suggestion. "But I do believe I'm a very talented football player and I'm going to continue working hard and try to get that opportunity to play in the league."
He's also said as much on his Twitter account in the past.
