Michael Sam: ESPN Reports on Gay NFL Player's Showering

By    |   Wednesday, 27 August 2014 01:17 PM EDT

Michael Sam's shower habits in the St. Louis Rams' locker room are apparently of utmost importance to ESPN, as the network featured a report on the first openly gay NFL player's cleaning schedule on Tuesday.

ESPN's Josina Anderson addressed how the 24-year-old defensive standout at Missouri is fitting in with his fellow Rams teammates during a Tuesday broadcast.

"[A] defensive player told me that 'Sam is respecting our space' and that, from his perspective, he seems to think that Michael Sam is waiting to take a shower, as not to make his teammates feel uncomfortable," Anderson reported.

Sam was picked up in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft in May and is now jockeying for a place on the team's final roster, which would make him the first openly gay active player in the league.

But the fact that ESPN deems a player's shower habits appropriate for broadcast irked some Twitter users who took to the micro-blogging site to blast the network.

Chris Long, Rams defensive lineman, even chimed in with some criticism of his own.

On Wednesday, the network issued an apology for the report.

"ESPN regrets the manner in which we presented our report. Clearly yesterday we collectively failed to meet the standards we have set in reporting on LGBT-related topics in sports."
