Michael Schumacher Skiing Crash Caught on Helmet Camera (Video)

By    |   Wednesday, 08 January 2014 12:16 PM EST

Footage from Michael Schumacher's skiing helmet shows that the famed Formula One driver was off the marked trail in the French Alps when he crashed on Dec. 29, suffering injuries that have left him in critical condition and in a coma.

Prosecutor Patrick Quincy told the Associated Press that experts were still examining the footage, but it showed that Schumacher landed roughly 30 feet outside the marked trail after falling face down and striking his head on a rock at Meribel.

"His pace was completely normal for a skilled skier," Lt. Col. Benoit Vinneman told the AP.

Quincy told the AP that did not know when his investigation would be completed. He said authorities plan more interviews in the case.

BBC News
reported that Stephane Bozon, one of the local policemen involved in the investigation, said Schumacher's skis were in "perfect condition" and were ruled out as a cause for the accident.

Schumacher underwent brain surgery at the Grenoble University Hospital Center after the accident, reported ESPN.

Chief anesthesiologist Jean-Francois Payen told ESPN that Schumacher was "fighting for his life" last week after surgery.

"We judge him to be in a very serious situation," Payen said. "We cannot tell what the outcome will be yet. We are working hour by hour, but it's too early to say what is going to happen and to have a prognosis. We think his helmet did help; without a helmet he wouldn't be here now."

BCC News noted that Schumacher's family has been with him at the hospital since the accident. The family, according to the BBC, has asked for privacy in recent days, requesting that journalists leave the clinic where Schumacher is being seen by doctors.

Schumacher has won seven world championships along with his 91 race victories in 19 years, making his the winning driver in Formula One history, according to BBC News. He captured two titles with Benetton, in 1994 and 1995, before switching to Ferrari in 1996 and reeled off five straight titles from 2000.
