Michael Strahan has closed the iconic gap between his teeth.

The former NFL player and "Good Morning America" host is known for his gap-toothed smile, so fans were taken aback when he posted a video on Twitter Tuesday showing himself undergoing a dental procedure to have the space closed. In the video, Strahan explains that people have discouraged him from doing the procedure his whole life but he wanted to do what was right for himself.

"If I post, it'll be don't do it. If I ask my friends, it'll be don't do it. If I ask my business partner, it'll be don't do it," he said. "I gotta do what I wanna do for myself. This is the moment, 50 years in the making."

After the procedure, which is reportedly temporary, Strahan appears visibly excited.

"I love it, Holy f***," he is heard saying in the video.

The 49-year-old will wear a removable dental piece while he decides whether to keep his new smile, according to TMZ. The video drew mixed reactions from Twitter followers. While some approved, others expressed disappointment.

"Yeah but gap teeth kids everywhere looked up to you & many can't afford to have this done b/c it's considered 'cosmetic' ~sincerely, a kid who grew up gap-toothed," one fan tweeted to Strahan.

"I miss the gap. It made you unique and handsome. Now you look like everyone else and that makes me sad. Why change something that made you stand out in a positive way?" another Twitter user wrote.

"Michael's teeth belong to Michael. He can do whatever he wants to do. Last time I looked, he was a grown man. He is a sweetheart either way. Find something else to gripe about cause this ain't it" a third Twitter user wrote defensively.

It's important to note that Strahan posted the video to Twitter two days before April 1, and social media is filled with speculation as to whether it is an elaborate April fool's prank, especially since last week he posted about how he was not ashamed of his gapped teeth.

"I rock my gap with pride! It’s who I am! Which of my friends do you think can rock it with me??? swipe right," he wrote in a post that included images of other notable figures who also had signature spaces between their front teeth. "@anthonyanderson you are missing out my brotha!  #ItDoesntFitEveryone," Strahan added.

This would not be the first time an NFL player has duped the public on April Fool's Day. In 2018, Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis had fans believe he had shaved his trademark unibrow after posting a similar video only to later reveal it was all a prank, Insider noted.
