Director Michelle MacLaren has quit the upcoming "Wonder Woman" film over "creative differences," according to reports.
“Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct ‘Wonder Woman’ together,”
the studio said in a statement, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
MacLaren was hired in November to direct the film, which stars Gal Gadot and is slated for release in 2017.
MacLaren’s work includes episodes of television shows “Breaking Bad,” “The Walking Dead,” “Game of Thrones,” and “Better Call Saul.” “Wonder Woman” was to be her first feature film.
The Hollywood Reporter compared the split to the 2011 parting of Patty Jenkins, who was to direct “Thor: The Dark World.”
“The fact that both MacLaren and Jenkins off their respective projects is sure to raise the question of whether women filmmakers are welcome in the world of high-stakes, superhero movies,” The Hollywood Reporter said.
Gadot will appear in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” due out next March.
“For the sake of the project and for everything else involved in this now knotty situation, I can certainly hope that Warner Bros. doesn’t back down from its original intentions and
find a female director as a replacement,” Scott Mendelson wrote for Forbes.
The film is in the pre-production stage, with four actors expected to get test offers for the leading male role this week,
Variety reported. It is unknown how MacLaren’s departure will affect the film’s production.
Twitter users commented about the split.
