Former first lady Michelle Obama visited a Washington, D.C. school to mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday, talking to young women at the school, including some recent immigrants.
Obama sat with 12 female students at the Francis L. Cardozo Education Campus, several of whom are recent Latin American and African immigrants from the school’s international program, according to People.
The girls didn’t know Obama was coming and greeted her with shock and surprise. “Did you know?” she asked the girls, People said. “You didn’t know.”
"This school is amazing," she said, hugging the girls. She went on to talk with them about education and their future goals, People reported.
"I loved visiting this school because it tells us the American story in so many ways," she later posted on Instagram, calling the girls "fierce" and "promising."
"By embracing young immigrants and their diverse cultures and contributions," she wrote, "Cardozo is a model for our entire country. The girls I met with today are ready to take on the world. We’ve just got to make sure that the world is ready for them."
