Comedian Michelle Wolf will host the White House Correspondents’ Dinner this year, the association announced Thursday.
Wolf has been a contributor to “The Daily Show With Trevor Noah” since 2016 and hosted a successful live special, “Nice Lady,” on HBO in 2017. Earlier in February, Wolf signed a deal to host a late-night show on Netflix.
“I’m delighted to announce ‘Nice Lady’ Michelle Wolf as our featured entertainer this year,” White House Correspondents' Association President Margaret Talev said in a statement. “Our dinner honors the First Amendment and strong, independent journalism. Her embrace of these values and her truth-to-power style make her a great friend to the WHCA. Her Pennsylvania roots, stints on Wall Street and in science and self-made, feminist edge make her the right voice now.”
The featured entertainer typically follows the remarks of the president at the dinner, but Trump didn’t attend last year’s event and it is unknown whether he will be present this year. Last year’s host was Hasan Minhaj, who attacked Trump in his remarks.
“Donald Trump is liar-in-chief,” Minhaj said at the dinner. “Remember, you guys are public enemy number one. You are his biggest enemy. Journalists, ISIS, normal-length ties.”
Wolf has delivered satirical and biting lines about Trump in her routines since he was elected president, though her HBO special stayed away from directly referencing him and instead talked about feminism, the sound of her voice, and why Hillary Clinton lost.
“We’re never going to have a nice lady run for president. Nice ladies aren’t in charge of things. And if you’re in charge of something, and you think you’re a nice lady — no one else does,” she says in the special.
