The Midwest is bracing itself for the winter storm that wreaked havoc in Southern California, bringing flash floods and mudslides to the region days ago.
ABC News noted that the storm had crossed the Rockies on Wednesday night and was gaining strength as it redeveloped in the Great Plains on Thursday morning.
Parts of southern Wyoming saw up to a foot of snowfall while North Dakota has seen up to six inches of snow dumped in blizzard conditions.
Midland Texas was being hammered by wind gusts of 68 mph, which was causing heavy dust storms, while warnings of snow, ice, flooding and strong winds have been issued in several other states.
The storm will sweep through the Great Plains and parts of the mid-South, bringing cold temperatures to the Tennessee, Mississippi and Ohio valleys by Friday morning and spreading heavy rain and thunderstorms into the Carolinas, ABC News reported.
The storm will gather in strength as it moves toward the Northeast, with meteorologists reporting a second low pressure area spreading the snow, sleet, and icy rain to parts further east from Friday night through to Saturday, Fortune noted.
ABC News reported that a flood watch had been implemented for areas north of New York City to Hartford, Connecticut, into Boston and Maine while AccuWeather noted that the risk of urban flooding was possible if areas with heavy snow cover experienced a rapid thaw, combined with heavy rains.
The Midwest will see about half a foot of snow fall while Mississippi to Tennessee and Indiana could see half a foot with ice accumulation of a quarter of an inch, according to ABC News.
New England could also see significant snowfall and ice accumulation and AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Samuhel has cautioned that “there is also a risk of roof collapses in New England, where up to a couple of feet of snow remains and the heavy rain adds more weight.”
The secondary cold pressure system will move from the Great Plains into the Northeast and the South, bringing freezing temperatures into the Midwest on Thursday before moving into the Northeast and the Southeast on Saturday night into Sunday morning.
