Miley Cyrus called on fans to go after Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton following his Wednesday comments on CNN about his home state's religious freedom bill.
"Let's stir some sh** up!"
the pop singer told her nearly 20 million Twitter followers on Thursday night. "Senator Cotton (202) 224-2353 !!!! Happy Hippies call & express why freedom is important to us & our country!"
The former "Hannah Montana" star was apparently inspired to make her call-to-action after
reading an article by ThinkProgress.org, to which she'd previously linked.
The article highlighted Cotton's interview with CNN host Wolf Blitzer, which was primarily about the Obama administration's ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran.
After discussing Iran for 12 minutes, Blitzer asked Cotton what he thought about the religious freedom bill, which has come under fire by some who say it's anti-gay.
Cotton said the law was based on a federal law signed by President Bill Clinton, and that it has no history of being used to discriminate against gay people. He then tried to steer the conversation back toward the Iran negotiations.
"I think it’s important we have a sense of perspective," he said. "In Iran they hang you for the crime of being gay."
Cotton's comments sought to highlight the evil behavior and perspective of the Iranian regime whom the U.S. is currently engaging. ThinkProgress, however, interpreted Cotton's comments as a minimization of what has come to be an important issue for the gay-rights community.
Pro-gay rights Cyrus was inspired by ThinkProgress' interpretation, and got her fans to flood Cotton's office with calls.
The witch hunt culminated in the line's voicemail inbox getting full.
