Miss Puerto Rico 2015 Destiny Velez was suspended indefinitely last week for an anti-Muslim rant on Twitter in response to an online campaign by filmmaker Michael Moore in support of Muslims.
The website said Velez, 20, posted a series of comments last Thursday about the religion, some responding directly to Moore, said the
Huffington Post. The
Washington Times said on Wednesday that Moore posted a photo of himself in front of New York City's Trump Tower reading "We are all Muslims," with some on social media posting pictures similar to Moore's online.
"There's NO comparison between Jews, Christians & Muslims. Jews nor Christians have terrorizing agendas in their sacred books," Velez wrote on a Twitter post on a profile, said the Washington Times, which has since been deleted.
"All (Muslims) do is build their mosques, feel offended by American values and terrorize innocent Americans and plant gas stations," said Velez.
"If we are all the same then Muslims need to take off their napkins off of their heads cuz I feel offended by it," she said in another Twitter post.
By Saturday, the Miss Puerto Rico Organization announced on its
Facebook page that Velez had been suspended indefinitely. The statement included an apology from Velez.
"Miss Velez's actions were in contradiction to the organization, and therefore as a consequence of her actions, she has been suspended indefinitely," the organization's statement read. "The Miss Puerto Rico Organization will not tolerate any actions or behavior contrary to the Miss Puerto Rico Organization. … The Miss Puerto Rico Organization apologizes for the distress that Miss Velez’s actions and conduct may have caused."
Velez did find support on social media.
