Miss Universe 2015 was crowned Sunday in Miami with Miss Colombia Paulina Vega taking the title despite a Twitter campaign that favored runner-up, Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell.
Vega, a 22-year-old business administration student, also beat out Miss USA Nia Sanchez, 24, for the crown at the
Florida International University Arena, The Washington Post reported.
"It is amazing," Vega told reporters after she beat out pageant winners from 87 other countries. "It's very new, very modern, it's very different. I will wear it with pride and excitement."
The contest was whittled down to the top 10 contestants when beauty queens from Italy, India, France, Indonesia, and Brazil were eliminated after the
evening gown competition, according to the Miami Herald.
That left Vega, Sanchez, Fennell, Miss Ukraine Diana Harkusha, and Miss Netherlands Yasmin Verheijen to vie for the crown.
Social media fans seemed to be leaning toward Fennell and were stunned by her fourth runner-up finish.
Vega did find support, though, from her fellow Colombian native and "Modern Family" actress Sofia Vergara, who posted her excitement on Twitter and Whosay.com.
The Daily Mail reported that Vergara and Vega both are from Barranquilla, Colombia.
