Missing Border Collie Found 3 Days Later Up a Neighbor's Tree

A border collie missing for three days was discovered 10 feet up a tree in a neighbor's yard – perhaps a one-way dead end after chasing a squirrel?

The 7-year-old dog named Laddy had been missing since Friday before being found by Ron Stevenson up a tree in his yard which is several blocks from the home of  Laddy's owner in Davenport, Iowa, the Quad-City Times reported.

"I'd been hearing this dog barking, but I didn't want to be a complaining neighbor and, besides, my wife and I are dog lovers," said Stevenson. "When I was outside early Sunday, I heard a whining, and I knew something wasn't right. This time, it sounded in distress."

Stevenson followed the sound until he located the dog, who was perched 10-feet above him in a tree near his driveway and where he was "kind of shielded by leaves on the tree."

Stevenson called 911, but didn't wait for authorities to arrive before climbing up the tree and rescuing the dog.

"[Police] got here pretty fast, but I was getting impatient," said Stevenson . "I didn't know if the dog would bite me, but I just sort of shimmmied up the tree. I grabbed him by the collar and sort of pulled him. I said, 'It's time for you to get out of this tree.'"

When police arrived Stevenson was standing in his driveway with Laddy by his side. He had taken a photo of the dog up in the tree to prove to the officers that the call wasn't a prank.

Officers Randy Gard had seen fliers for the missing dog and Laddy to owner Cynthia Weeks.

Weeks told the Quad-City Times that the dog had escaped from the family's yard. An invisible electronic fence apparently wasn't working because of a dead battery in Laddy's collar.

Weeks said Laddy loves chasing squirrels and might have pursued one up the tree but couldn't get down..

Except for a few abrasions on his paws, Laddy is doing fine, said Weeks.

"He was pretty subdued when he got home," she said. "He's been doing a ton of sleeping."

As this unrelated video shows, some dogs have no problem climbing trees:.
