Missing Plane Ended Flight in Indian Ocean, Victims' Families Told

The missing plane has been found, according to Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak, who told reporters and families of the victims that Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 had "ended" its journey in the southern Indian Ocean, off the Australian coast.

"This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites," Razak said at the news conference. "It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean."

The confirmation of the plane's whereabouts stemmed from an analysis provided by satellite data from a British satellite company, CNN reported. The new data reportedly placed the submerged plane roughly 1,500 miles southwest of Perth, Australia.

Prior to his announcement, Malaysia Airlines had already spoken to the families of those who were on flight 370 and informed them of the development, Razak added.

One of those family members was reported as having left a conference with airline representatives in Beijing, telling reporters, "They have told us all lives are lost," CNN noted.

Monday morning's announcement came the same day in which a crew in an Australian P-3 Orion aircraft located two floating objects in the area where the plane went down, one of which was described as being a gray or green "circular" object, the other being rectangular and orange.

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott told Razak that the objects in question would be retrieved as soon as Monday afternoon by a ship dispatched as part of the search, NBC News reported.

According to the Malaysian Prime Minister, a subsequent press conference would be held on Tuesday, during which more details of the crash site would be released.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 had 239 people aboard when it went missing on March 8, 227 of whom were passengers, 12 were crew.

Of the 227 passengers, three were Americans, with two reportedly being children. Among the other nationalities in the flight when it went missing were 38 Malaysians, seven Indonesians, six Australians, five Indians, and four French. The remainder of the passengers on the flight were Chinese nationals.
