A mob boss is Tom Hardy's latest role and the actor has undergone a dramatic biopic makeover to become Al Capone for Josh Trank's "Fonzo."
Hardy is known for his spectacular transformations, having bulked up considerably to play Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," but the actor still shocked fans with unrecognizable images of himself post hair and makeup, ready for his role as the American mobster, The Daily Mail reported.
The selfies, which he shared to Instagram on Wednesday, show Hardy wearing a scraggly wig and prosthetics that have drastically altered his appearance.
"Mega awkward character misstep," he captioned one image.
Another unsettling image he simply captioned "chasing Fonzo."
The gritty photos are a stark contrast to the kempt, sleek look associated with Capone's younger days, but they reflect the darker, tormented side of the mob boss in his later years, which is central to the biopic's theme.
According to MovieWeb, "Fonzo" centers upon Capone after nearly a decade of imprisonment, when dementia "rots his mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life."
Speaking about the role to The Daily Beast, Hardy said the character was not what he expected.
"It's not the classic Al Capone that you necessarily envision with the silhouette," he said. "I don't want to give too much away about it, but there's definitely a transformation with that role."
Hardy added that Capone had "lost a lot of weight before he passed because he was suffering from Syphilis and deteriorating," and he had to undergo changes to mimic that.
