Mom Pole Dances, Child Strapped to Her Back; Video Sparks Debate

By    |   Tuesday, 24 March 2015 05:07 PM EDT

A video of activist mom Ashley Wright as she pole dances with her child strapped to her back has sparked debate among viewers.

The video has garnered more than 430,000 views since being posted on March 14 and comments range from admiration of her strength and flexibility to criticism about the possible risks to her 2-year-old daughter, Shannon.

“I think we all deserve proof that her child is still alive at the end. Was she sleeping or did she just lose consciousness from not being able to breathe?” one YouTube commenter wrote.

Another commenter came to Wright’s defense: “When did we become a country where absolute strangers know more about the needs and protections of a child than the actual mother?”

Wright, who calls herself a "badass breastfeeding, babywearing, attachment parenting, pole dancing, yogi momma," dismissed her critics.

“I’ve been called names like ‘stripper’ and ‘bad parent’ and while I understand, remarks like these are sometimes from people who were taught to shame their bodies. People are mostly supportive, though, and say that I’m teaching my daughter how to love herself unconditionally,” the 29-year-old single mother told Yahoo Parenting.

Wright previously drew criticism for a video of herself pole dancing while six months pregnant and another with her young daughter afoot.

“When i dance, it is not simply because I enjoy it. I dance because it is a part of being human; a part of who I am,” Wright wrote on her Facebook page.

Twitter users shared mixed reaction.
