Mortal Kombat arcade games "secret menus" hidden for 20 years were recently discovered by gamers, including one that lets you cheat your name onto the high scorer list.
The hidden menus, which include a message from games co-creator Ed Boon, can be accessed by pressing a unique sequence of buttons on the game, revealed the electronics website
BGR.com. There are also similar menus on Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat III,
A video detailing how to access the secret menus has garnered more than 550,000 views on YouTube since it was posted on Sunday.
"The 'EJB menus' (named for series co-creator Ed J. Boon) have been sitting unknown and unloved in the first three Mortal Kombat arcade cabinets since their release in the early '90s," said the website
Ars Technica.
"The options in the menus themselves are mainly devoted to diagnostic testing and internal management for arcade owners, but you can also use the menus to jump directly to the endings for specific characters, cheat your initials into the high score screen, and view some secret thank-you messages from Boon himself."
Evidence of the Mortal Kombat's secret menu first came to light in October when members of website The Cutting Room Floor found them, said
Maxim. The Cutting Room Floor catalogs unused and unusual parts of video games,
"It's crazy to think such a popular series of arcade cabinets could hold their secrets so long."
The website Gizmodo.com said the secret menu in Mortal Kombat III was "considerably more robust," allowing gamers to find hidden characters, watch every fatality on the game, and start the "Penacho/Miller Game" with the Galaga clone.
