The iconic Ford Mustang is turning 50 and, to celebrate, Ford is unveiling a special limited edition model.
Ford will introduce 1,964 special edition models — a number that references the year the Mustang first hit the market. The 50th Anniversary Edition is basically a
Mustang GT dressed up, according to Automobilemag.com.

Rather than the free-running steed used on the standard 2015 Mustang, the 2015 Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition’s familiar "pony-in-corral" marches across the front. The model will have fork-spoke wheels rather than five-spoke alloys. Camouflage obscures the rear quarter windows, an allusion to the car's former old-school windows. The model will also sport a host of special-edition badging both inside and out, Automobilemag.com reported.
FoxNews.com reported that each 50th anniversary car is to be equipped with an upgraded performance package, powered by a 5.0-liter V8 with "at least" 420 hp. The model, which will be available with manual or automatic transmissions, comes in two colors: Wimbledon White or Kona Blue.
Wimbledon White was the color selected for the first retail Ford Mustang, introduced on April 17, 1964.
The car will be displayed at the 2014 New York Auto Show, nearly 50 years after it appeared at the 1964 New York World's Fair.
As part of the 50th anniversary of the Mustang, Ford Motor Co. will stuff pieces of the brand new 2015 Ford Mustang convertible into the elevator of the Empire State Building and assemble it on the roof, mimicking a 1965 stunt the automaker did with the original Mustang.
"The observation deck is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., leaving our crew of six with only a six-hour window to get everything out onto the deck and get the car assembled,"
Mustang's chief engineer Dave Pericak said on the company's website. "Before we shipped the crates to New York, the crew spent several days practicing the entire assembly process, timing everything down to the minute much like a NASCAR or Formula One pit crew."

"We've taken the new Mustang to new heights of technology and refinement, so we decided to take it to new heights literally for this celebration," Pericak said.
The Mustang will be on display at the Empire State Building Wednesday and Thursday, then move to the 2014 New York International Auto Show.
The standard 2015 Ford Mustang coupe is slated to go on sale this fall.
