NASCAR team owners warned racing teams over the weekend that any national anthem protesters will be fired.
The announcement comes after President Donald Trump sparked controversy, calling out NFL anthem protesters and saying they be fired, Sporting News noted.
Trump later suggested that NFL change its policies to ensure players stand proud for their anthem.
Several NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series team owners shared Trump’s sentiments, saying they would not support those protesting during the national anthem over the weekend.
USA Today reported that Sunday’s pre-race festivities at New Hampshire Motor Speedway were devoid of any anthem protests.
Richard Childress, who was Dale Earnhardt’s long-time team owner, said per The Associated Press that protesting the anthem would “get you a ride on a Greyhound bus.”
He added that anyone who worked with him should respect country they lived in, which so many people gave their lives for.
Hall of Fame driver Richard Petty added that “anybody that don’t stand up for the anthem oughta be out of the country. Period. What got ’em where they’re at? The United States.”
He agreed that anyone within the organization protesting the anthem should be fired.
Meanwhile, Andy Murstein who owns the majority of Richard Petty Motorsports, told ESPN that he would not consider firing an employee who protests.
"I would sit down with them and say it's the wrong thing to do that, and many people, including myself, view it as an affront to our great country," he said.
"If there is disenchantment towards the president or a few bad law enforcement officers, don't have it cross over to all that is still good and right about our country."
