National Tequila Day 2013: US Celebrates Mexican Beverage

By    |   Wednesday, 24 July 2013 06:48 PM EDT

Wednesday is National Tequila Day. The beloved beverage has its own unofficial holiday, and while the origins of the annual celebration aren't clear, it's nonetheless a holiday in the U.S. and Mexico.

Tequila dates back to the 16th century, but the distilled beverage was not exported to the United States until the late 1800s. Made from the blue agave plant, tequila is produced exclusively in the area surrounding Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico.

Mexico has international rights to the word "tequila," and Mexican law specifies that the drink can only be produced in the state of Jalisco.

If it came from anywhere else, it's not real tequila.

While reminding excited patrons to drink responsibility, the Twitter universe got in on the celebration:

"Grab your salt & lime -- it's National #Tequila Day!" posted LettuceEntertainYou.

Perhaps summing up the sentiment was user "/labhya," who posted: "Today is National #Tequila Day so obviously tomorrow is National Where Am I Day."

News organizations like the Washington Post and Los Angeles Times participate in the fun, offering recipes and drinks to celebrate.

According to the National Day Calendar, July 24 is also National Amelia Earhart Day, National Cousins Day, and National Drive-Thru Day.
