The U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis is getting into a trademark war with Nike. It’s demanding that the sportswear company and Undefeated, a Los Angeles-based boutique, “cease and desist ” using a logo that looks uncannily like the crest of the academy.

Annapolis is also taking their case to America’s ultimate arbiter — the court of public opinion. The Naval Academy released a statement to Nike on Twitter.

The Annapolis, Maryland, Capital Gazette reported that previous posts published by Nike depicting the logo on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, were deleted Friday.

The publication continued, “A lookbook of the clothes is no longer available on the Undefeated website. The Nike registration page for the pop-up event is still active.”

The Capital Gazette reported that neither Nike nor Undefeated responded to multiple requests for comment.

Naval Academy graduates, including Scott Koenig, Class of 1994, were appalled. He said it’s “clear they just took the graphic,” the Capital Gazette reported.

“When viewed from any distance other than a few inches, it’s the Naval Academy logo,” Koenig added. “It’s such a distinct and easily recognizable symbol, I don’t know how you could mistake it for anything else.”

People took to social media to voice their agreement.
