NBC Cancels Shows 'Ironside,' 'Welcome to the Family' Amid Bad Reviews

NBC has canceled two of its new fall shows, "Ironside" and "Welcome to the Family," after the network's latest attempt at a scripted-series comeback crashed and burned.

The drama series and comedy failed to draw viewers and both programs got the axe after just three episodes apiece, according to the Los Angeles Times.

"Ironside" is a remake of the 1960s drama of the same name. Starring Blair Underwood as a tough-talking detective who is resigned to a wheelchair following a shooting, the show was dubbed the "Worst Drama of 2013" by TV review site HollywoodChicago.com.

"Ironside is the most clichéd, least believable, least fun, and just awful new drama of the year. It is aggressively bad. Avoid at all costs," reviewer Brian Tallerico wrote.

"Welcome to the Family" is NBC's stab at a familial comedy a la ABC's "Modern Family." The show centers on a young interracial couple who is unexpectedly expecting.

"If you thought 'Michael J. Fox Show' played with sitcom clichés, welcome to this mess, a clear answer to some executive's 'where’s our "Modern Family"' question to his staff," Tallerico wrote. "Despite a talented cast, the writing just doesn’t work here."

NBC's schedule shakeup is likely a proactive move to avoid the January ratings fall-off that hurt the network so much last year, the Times reported. Execs are hopeful, though, that the upcoming Winter Olympics coverage will boost numbers.

In the meantime, "Dateline" will air in "Ironside's" Wednesday night time slot until Jan. 8, when the new "Chicago Fire" spinoff — "Chicago P.D." — premieres.

New episodes of "Parks and Recreation" will take over "Welcome to the Family's" Thursday night spot until "Community" returns in January.
