Ford unveiled its news GT supercar Monday at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, a vehicle Motor Authority says will hit production lines next year.
"As stunning as it looks, the GT on show in Detroit isn't a concept to be watered down by the time production rolls around but a preview of the car that will be hitting showrooms
sometime in 2016," Motor Authority's Viknesh Vijayenthiran wote.
"It's got all the typical supercar cues such as a mid-mounted engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration, and a sleek, aerodynamic coupe body. But instead of the typical V-8 engine found in most performance Fords, including the previous GT, the new generation will come packing an EcoBoost V-6 engine whose twin-turbochargers will help liberate more than 600 horsepower," Vijayenthiran continued.
Joe Hinrichs,
Ford's president of The Americas, told the Detroit Free Press that the GT was crafted by a small team at its product development center in Dearborn, Michigan, and the company will produce a limited number the second half of 2016 for sale in the United States.
"If you could use innovation to build the ultimate Ford performance vehicle, what would it be?" Ford's chief executive officer Mark Fields asked the Detroit Auto Show crowd
before the GT rollout, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Well, here's an idea."
"The low-slung two-seater is a mid-engine supercar, and takes cues from the GT that Ford built a decade ago," the Times' David Undercoffler wrote. "That car was a modern interpretation of the iconic GT40 that Ford sold in the 1960s and raced to a stunning 1-2-3 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966."
The Free Press reported that Ford also showed off the 2017 F-150 Raptor high-performance, off-road pickup and the Shelby GT350R Mustang, which is a track-ready but street legal version of the GT350 first shown at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.
"Ford shook the automotive world when it introduced America's first true exotic car in 2005," Karl Brauer, senior analyst with KBB.com, told the newspaper. "Now the Blue Oval is poised to do it again, only this time there will be a street and a race version of the car . . . Dealers, start your waitlisting."
Ford told the Los Angeles Times that it will have 12 models in the performance line by 2020.
