A 15-vehicle pileup on the New Jersey Turnpike on Monday night left one person dead, several injured and the southbound lanes closed until Tuesday morning.
The multi-vehicle accident involving four tractor-trailers, two box trucks, a bus full of passengers and several cars happened about 9:11 p.m. in Cranbury Township in Central New Jersey, state police said in a
Facebook post.
Daryl Williams, 52, of Bordentown, New Jersey, was trapped in his car and died,
according to WCBS-TV.
NJ Advance Media reported that police had lowered the speed limit to 35 miles per hour on the turnpike from Interchange 6 to Exit 12.
Cindy Sattal, who was stuck in traffic, told NJ Advance Media that freezing rain started coming down just before the accident.
"I stuck my hand out to wipe off the rear-view mirror and it was freezing on contact," said Sattal, who waited for at least 90 minutes on the turnpike. "Everybody's pretty quiet. Everybody's being very patient."
One turnpike employee said road crews tried to keep ice off the roads by salting them most of the day.
"It just all of the sudden froze up," the employee told 1010 WINS-AM's John Montone. "It was a multi-car pileup, both roadways – inner and outer."
Tom Feeney, a Turnpike Authority spokesman, said the southbound inner lanes were reopened about 3 a.m. The authority announced on Twitter at 8:23 on Tuesday that all lanes were open again.
