Eight new Mouseketeers debuted Friday as Disney gives "The Mickey Mouse Club" a modern revamp and launched it on social media platforms.
Entertainment Weekly noted the modernized version of the classic kids series, called "Club Mickey Mouse" and which airs video content on Facebook and Instagram, breaks grounds as one of the first programs to be developed specifically for social media.
The savvy teens making up the new Mouseketeers cast are first and foremost digital creators who will share video experiences, music videos, and songs via Facebook and Instagram.
Andrew Sugerman, EVP of Publishing and Digital Media at Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media, told EW “it’s not a traditional web series and it’s not just digital-first, it’s social-first.”
He explained the show is programmed “specifically for social media audiences who want to follow the kids’ journey just as they would follow their friends’ stories.”
According to Variety, the program is set to run for seven weeks and audiences can expect around 70 pieces of content to be published per week.
Sugerman said the show is a “digital-first variety program that celebrates everything that was done in the original programs, but presenting content in the way it’s consumed by today’s Gen Z audiences.”
The new Mousketeers are Regan Aliyah, Jenna Alvarez, Ky Baldwin, Gabe De Guzman, Leanne Tessa Langston, Brianna Mazzola, Sean Oliu, and Will Simmons.
Speaking about the cast selection process, Sugerman told Variety that selectors visited various schools, performing arts groups, and dance studios.
“We wanted to pick a cast that had talent, kids who represented creators in and of themselves but who were approachable and represented the notion of attainability,” he said.
